prague

Our full day in Prague started meeting up with two fellow Copenhagen Business School students... or at least in theory. We'd told Tad and Howard to meet us in front of an Art Nouveau cafe on the upper level of Hlavni Nadrazi (main train station) Saturday morning...

This is where we were supposed to find them...... waiting... waiting... And Bruce wandered, finally to find Tad. Party Boy was up too late, missed his Copenhagen --> Prague flight, took the train instead, just showed up, no idea where his buddy Howard was... and no clue how to get to his hostel, no clue how to use the Metro system. 'Salright. We took care of him, and we all set off sightseeing for the day.

(When we found the hostel, Howard had made it to Prague on his own, found the hostel, and had paid for the two of them. What a guy!)

Gorgeous synagogue near Hlavni Nadrazi

Looking down the street at the Municipal House (Prague's largest concert hall)

Municipal House from the front.

Yes, the front wall of this store is *entirely* crystal figurines, steins, wine glasses, shot glasses... it stopped us, we needed a picture.

Just a shot down the street in the Old Town...

Approaching Old Town square, with Tyn Church in the back (you can tell -- it looks moody and whiny)

Town Hall

Statue of Jan Hus, Czech's answer to Martin Luther

Church of St. Nicholas

And in the Old Town square of Prague.. we found familiar faces! That's me and Tad on the right, but on the left, Abby and Kara from the building where we stayed in Copenhagen!

The overrated hourly clock tower chime at Town Hall.

More Old Town architecture...

More nifty architecture

Looking up into an archway on the Charles Bridge

Mass humanity and vendors on the Charles Bridge

Statue at the midpoint of the bridge

Exiting the bridge into the Little Quarter

St. Vitus Cathedral in profile

St. Vitus Cathedral

While on Castle Hill, we walked down to the city overlook. This is Bruce's artsy shot of the city through one of the railings.

Overlooking Prague (and all of the other people also overlooking Prague)

Old Town square is in the middle of this view

Walking down the hill from the Castle District

WWII Memorial

Castle and Cathedral from below

Charles Bridge, again

The Dancing House (Frank Gehry). There's Ginger on the left (she has a skirt, and the more "womanly" figure) and Fred on the right.

Notebooky!!
Actually, this is good opportunity to make a comment on the language. This is my first trip in which I'm visiting countries for which I have never studied the language, and Czech bears no resemblance to anything I've ever learned (other than "notebooky"). Bruce insisted, in fact, that I not study any Czech words, that I fly by the seat of my pants -- totally unusual for me.

National Museum

These are our B&B hosts, Jitka and Jan. I have to include them because, without question, they made us (free of charge!!!) sandwiches for our train journey to Budapest (7 hours), and he gave us a ride to the Metro station. The former would become very important...

And this is why we were grateful for extra food. This is the train to Budapest -- apparently all trains are like this, packed to the gills. This is the hallway -- some people on fold-down little seats, some people sitting on the floor. (We got fold-down seats, luckily.) Getting there early doesn't matter; the train comes from Berlin, and all regular seats are long gone. It was a long ride, but we made it... the last hour (of 7), we got in a regular cabin. However, we did realize that we got the better window with our meager seats -- perhaps that was the trade-off? May this be a word of warning if you ever want to get from Prague to Budapest...
