roskilde (denmark)

This is a town 20 minutes(by train) outside of Copenhagen. Perhaps it is best known for its rock festival the last weekend of June -- it's said that it takes the full year to clean up and get ready for the following year. We went to experience a town outside of CPH, and to see the Viking Ship Museum -- a museum Bruce visited 29 years ago.

Back mid-last century, some ancient Viking ships were found at the base of the Roskilde fjord. A group of archaeologists has made it their project to restore these five boats, and a museum was built to display the boats and teach others about them. In fact, a replica was built of the boat that originated in Dublin (a Viking city) and as of August 9 this year, it will have made its second voyage from Dublin --> Roskilde, replicating some of the journeys that were made long ago. Check out some of our photos below of the town and the museum.

You can see a few of the boats here. The nearer one looks like a wider one (more a cargo boat). The farther one -- it's hard to tell in the picture -- but it's a narrower, longer one, more suitable for battle.

The innards of one of the boats that hadn't had quite so much reconstructed yet.

And finally... the town of Roskilde.
